Thrifty Miss

Saving money.

Are there any two words more likely to conjure up images of frugal joylessness?

However, the credit crunch means that everybody has to tighten their financial belts at the moment.

As a penniless cub reporter rather than, for example, a professional granddaughter of Mr Hilton, being financially savvy is particularly important for me.

In recent times I’ve been thinking more and more of ways to penny pinch to help stop having to cut back on the good things in life.

And so, armed with nothing more than a calculator, a determined expression and a bank balance that would shame a church mouse, I have set myself the task of finding ways to live well on a budget.

So, I invite you to join me as I set out on my journey – odyssey, in fact  – searching for the best ways of spending less while still having fun.

I like the sounds of this blog.
Might I advise that people do their shopping on a Sunday before the supermarkets close as there are many bargains to be had then.
Also - many supermarket own brand things are as good as the branded ones.
Stealing is also a good way of saving money.

I read an article the other day about the WI that recommends keeping a flask by your kettle and everytime you boil too much in the kettle pour it into the flask to be used for the washing up later.

Hi Steve Not The Tramp But Still Poor, good ideas there, and an even better name.

In fact, I'm planning to look at how supermarket own-brands compare to premium brands in the very near future so keep reading!

I have to say stealing isn't one of the options I'm planning to look at, but if the credit crunch continues perhaps it'll be necessary...

In my student days, a week's shopping once consisted of 25 tins of Value beans and a few loaves of bread. Enough food for a whole week for less than £2- take that student overdraft!

Of course, I never had beans on toast more than once a day and it actually lasted for about a month, only a complete idiot would ever attempt a beans on toast diet!

Or a budding journalist..................... I suggest that Thrifty Miss attempt a Morgan Spurlock-esque bean diet for a whole week and let us know how it goes.

What next for our brave heroine?
Will her liver turn to paté?
Will she turn bright orange?
Will she spend the whole week farting?

Tune in next week to find out!
Same thrift time, same thrift chanel!

Zoe - I love the idea of filling a flask up with water!

Yay the WI, penny pinching all the way.

Actually, here's a top tip, it's cheaper to boil water via a gas hob than the kettle. I hope that helps the NHS wage go further.

I'm not sure I could cope with a beans on toast diet, but after eating some less-than-delicious beans on toast yesterday I am going to do a taste test on value beans in the near future so stay tuned!
