Let Them Eat Bread

In the spirit of New Year's resolutions, my money-saving is being reinstated after the hangover of a Christmas full of excess.

However, diet or no diet, there are few things better than hot bread with fresh butter, in my opinion.

And bread making is one of those things I feel I should be able to do, but actually have never bothered attempting.

All that messing around with proving! Temperamental yeast! Kneading! Far better to just have a loaf of ready sliced, I think.

Being a credit-busting young money saver, however, my ears pricked up when I heard you can get free yeast from the supermarket bakery counter if you ask nicely.

Sure enough, when I went to Asda in Lower Earley, I was given my very own bag of fresh yeast.

And so to home, where I merrily kneaded away and baked my floury creation.

I’m sure Mr Warburton isn’t yet fearing for his livelihood, but I was actually really proud of my bread.

It’s a bit hard, but I did use super-saintly seed-ridden flour to try to add a seasonal touch of healthiness (New Year diet and all).

Anyway, when I’m a bit more confident that my baking won’t have all the softness and delicacy of a cannonball, I intend to bring in some fresh bread for all the Wokingham Times and Bracknell Standard staff in our office.

And for less than £1 for a bag of flour, I think it’s a brilliant way of saving money!
