Making life taste… a bit mediocre at times

Last week’s money-saving mission was so successful I have decided to extend it.

I haven't followed it to the letter though, because I threw three bottles of wine (on special offer!), some steaks and dark chocolate into the trolley last night to make a special dinner for my brother, who heads 11,500 miles tomorrow to follow his heart to New Zealand. So I have already cheated, but for a good cause.

A last supper of beans on toast is a bit miserable.

I went to Asda in Lower Earley last week to shop and it was unbelievably cheap!

20p for a packet of bean sprouts was a highlight, but some of the other bargain buys included cheap-as-chips chicken and reduced naan bread for 14p.

There was a minor difference of opinion over whether to buy value prawns.

I was all for it (and got my way, this being my experiment and all) but unfortunately there were complaints that they would be the size of fingernails.

But, the point was that I was experimenting with whether value food was worth it or not, which meant I had to be consistent.

I won, the prawns went in a curry, and there were happy faces all round.

I see from their adverts that Tesco has extended its value range so I plan to try that, but in the interests of accurate reporting, I’m going to try some of the other local supermarket ranges first to fully draw my conclusions.

My early findings suggest that if value food is used as an ingredient, it’s fine (chicken in stir fry, for instance), but things like cheapo tea bags are a bit of a waste of money.

Also, if you have time to search around for the bargains it’s brilliant, but by the time I got in after work and shopping it was nearly 8pm. However, later on in the day it’s well worth looking at the reduced counter.

I have covered Tesco and Asda, and will look at Morrisons and Sainsburys next.

I prefer the spend more, buy less strategy so I can avoid eating chicken that has had a "natural marinade" of other chicken's poo.

The value ranges at supermarkets are a minefield.
It's not just the food that you have to be careful with - value bin bags have all the rubbish retention powers of cling film and value sponge scourers disintigrate as you do your washing up.
I once bought some value plates for about 20 p each. They're silver and plastic. I thought "wow, these are great, not only do they look swanky but I can drop them and it won't matter."
When I was eating my dinner and I noticed that there were tiny silver flecks floating about in it I realised the error of my ways.

Once again I must extol the virtues of my old hobby - stolen things are always good value...
